It’s no secret that the logo an organization chooses can define them for years to come. Look at Nike, Coca Cola, McDonalds, Apple, and even Starbucks. You see their logo and you are instantly reminded that you haven’t been there in awhile or even just reminded that you really like their product. A logo really creates a story for customers and that’s why we thought it was a good time for us to go on the hunt for a new one. We decided that we wanted a fresh and new look!

University of Northern Iowa (UNI) senior marketing and management double major, Gabe Groothuis of Marion, won the UNI Elevator Pitch Competition that was held on campus Tuesday, October 9th.  He will get to test his pitch against college students from around the nation at the National Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization (CEO) Conference Elevator Pitch Competition which will be held in Kansas City, Mo this November 1 through November 3. Join us for the Elevator Pitch Competition taking place on October 9th, at 5pm in the Scholar Room at the Rod Library. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners as well as 3 honorable mentions.

Register by completing the Intent to Compete form attached. These forms are due by Friday, October 5, and they can be emailed to jpec@uni.edu.

A workshop will also be offered on Tuesday, September 18th, at 5pm in the Scholar Room at the Rod Library. Laurie Watje will be presenting on how to give a pitch and what criteria you will be judged on for the upcoming competition.

For three days at the end of August the JPEC and Center for Business Growth and Innovation Staff hosted the Cedar Falls High School Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) program strands for their beginning of the semester orientation. Once the school year begins, the business/communications/design strand will be hosted in the Business and Community Services Building on campus. The three day workshop emphasized:

"Self-awareness" - Increasing the awareness of each participant regarding their personality temperament and that of others in their strand.  

"Team Awareness" - Increasing the awareness of the value of a diverse team and the value of creative thinking.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cedar Falls Tourism & Visitors Bureau, Mayor Jim Brown led a 30 kilometer bike ride on Saturday, August 30th. The group stopped for a visit at Mill Race Coworking, Black Hawk Aronia Berry Farms and Evergreen Massage Therapy, Barn Happy, and lastly to the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center for lunch. These stops provided the participants with a closer look at exciting business ventures in the area and a chance to network. Food was provided by Kubo, a local food truck, and Try Pie brought delicious treats. Center Falls Utilities provided ice water after a long, hot ride!

There was a great group of people for the bike ride!

Every summer students from UNI, Iowa State, University of Iowa, Buena Vista, and Iowa Lakes Community College attend the Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute held August 5-10th at Iowa Lakeside Labs. OEI is a week-long opportunity to grow as an entrepreneur and this year TJ Nissen of Network Nirvana placed second in the pitch competition and won $400. Emily Teymeyer, JPEC Program Assistant, and her team took first place in the blue universe. All of the students were inspired by the experience and are grateful to the Okoboji Community for welcoming Iowa students to their area for the past 13 years to encourage entrepreneurship in Iowa.

Kayla Kearns, a senior communications major, pitched her company Cool Aluminum Products, to a panel of judges to win $500. The company manufactures and installs window wells.

The UNI Student Pitch Competition was part of the Paul Singh Business Tour, sponsored by Helix Academy. Lincoln Savings Bank sponsored the $500 award.

T. J. Nissen, a senior graphic technologies major and owner of Network Nirvana, a gaming company, was the second place winner. Corey Behrens, a sophomore communications major and owner of Simplistic Views, a videography company, took third place.

Kyle Coogler, T. J. Nissen, and Corey Behrens will compete at the state-level of the Pappajohn Student Entrepreneurial Venture Competition for the chance to win $5,000. The three regional winners will compete in Des Moines against 12 other regional winners on April 20.  

Students submitted an executive summary, business model canvas, and financial projections that were reviewed by a regional panel of judges. The students will now present to John Pappajohn and other judges regarding the viability of their business idea.

Kyle Coogler, UNI senior communications major and owner of Creo, a business in the JPEC's R. J. McElroy Student Business Incubator at UNI, has been selected as one of 25 national finalists for the Schulze Entrepreneurship Challenge which is sponsored by the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, the Schulze School of Entrepreneurship at the University of St. Thomas, and EIX.org, a non-profit online platform for entrepreneurship education. 

A panel of 40 judges narrowed the submissions, which included a pitch deck and video, to the 25 finalists who will compete April 12-14 in Minnesota for $250,000 in cash prizes. Coogler's business, Creo,  is the only finalists from Iowa. Other fin...
